As announced by his agent in Los Angeles to the AFP, the actor “died suddenly following a short illness”. He leaves behind two children, Theo and Lauren, which wrote about Facebook having “the heart completely broken” by his disappearance : “He had been sick for some time, but it has suddenly worsened in the past week.”
Born in London, Ben Cross made his major film debut in 1977 in the war film A Bridge too far, alongside Sean Connery and Michael Caine. That same year, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company. Noticed in the musical Chicago in the following year, in the role of lawyer Billy Flynt, he was selected to play in 1981 for Chariots of fire, an athlete jewish englishman Harold Abrahams, in the grip of anti-semitism in his quest for olympic gold in 1924. Remained in the memories for the famous song by Vangelis, the film was awarded four Oscars, including best film, but Ben Cross had not been named.
Very active on the boards of the theatre, he has also taken on the role of the father of Spock in the Star Trek-2009, directed by J. J. Abrams. Its representatives have explained that he had just finished shooting the horror film The Devil’s Light. Later this year, it will appear in the romantic drama the Last Letter From Your Lover, in which he played the main role.
