The story of I’ll give You a rose, the success of Simone Cristicchi Sanremo 2007

If there is a song that has devoted the career of Simone Cristicchi, this is “I’ll give You a rose”, the piece with which the artist won the Sanremo Festival in 2007 and which will be revived on the stage of the Ariston in the evening, a cover of the Thursday, February 6 from Enrico Nigiotti and Simon Webbe, author and performer of the song. Nigiotti also leads in the race, “Kiss me Now” for its second consecutive participation at san remo.

It is one of the wins more convincing than the recent history of Sanremo, in an edition conducted by Pippo Baudo and Michelle Hunziker. Simone Cristicchi brought in competition to the Festival a piece very intimate, the result of his study on the subject of centers of mental hygiene and of the waste that they have left. The song won, finishing in first place in front of Al Bano and Piero Mazzocchetti.

The meaning of I’ll give You a rose

The story of Antonio, the protagonist of the song, it is an obvious example. The song is basically a reworking of a letter written by a man confined in an insane asylum since he was a child only for the excess of imagination that a child would believe “speaking with the devil”. Twenty years, and the time spent in the institute, a time lived in waiting of Margaret, the beloved for whom it is intended, the letter written before Antonio, you take away the life. Of course the letter is a pretext to talk about the condition in which they have lived for years people with disabilities mental, a reflection on the concept of madness, and about what the insane represent to the company. “Question marks without any sentence, thousands of ships that don’t return to the base”, as to emphasize the inability to place these people in a context without which they “disturb” the peace, “mad people are the apostles of a god that doesn’t want them”. Particularly significant to the theatre was the performance of Webbe at the Sanremo festival, a song performed with the scenic element of a chair on which, in the final part of the song, the artist’s saliva, mimicking the gesture of flying, namely that of Antonio, who is launched into the vacuum.

The text I’ll give You a rose

I’ll give you a rose
A red rose to paint everything
A rose for your every tear from consular
And a pink one to be able to love
I’ll give you a rose
A white rose as if you were my bride
A white rose that you need to forget
Every little doloreMi name is Antonio and I am crazy
I was born in ’54 and I live here since I was a child
I speak with the devil
So I have closed forty years inside a mental asylum
I am writing you this letter because I do not know speak
Forgive the handwriting from the first grade
And I wonder if I still get a thrill
But it is the fault of the hand that does not stop tremareIo are like a piano with a key broken
The dissonant chord of an orchestra of drunks
And day and night are alike
In the little light that pierces the opaque glass
I take the under, because I’m afraid
For the company of healthy people, we have always been garbage
It stinks of piss and sawdust
This is mental illness and there is no treated give a rose
A red rose to paint everything
A rose for your every tear from consular
And a pink one to be able to love
I’ll give you a rose
A white rose as if you were my bride
A white rose that you need to forget
Every little doloreI crazy are question marks without any sentence
Thousands of ships that don’t return to the base
Are stuffed animals hung out to dry in the sun
Mad people are the apostles of a God that doesn’t want them
Me I make the snow with styrofoam
My pathology is that I was only
Now take a telescope, measured the distances
And look, between you and me, who is more dangerous?
Inside the halls we were in love secretly
Cutting out a corner that was only our
I remember the few moments in which we felt alive
Not like the medical records crammed in the archives
My memories of you will be the last to fade
You were like an angel tied to a radiator
In spite of everything I wait for you still
And if I close my eyes I feel your hand I touched will present a pink
A red rose to paint everything
A rose for your every tear from consular
And a pink one to be able to love
I’ll give you a rose
A white rose as if you were my bride
A white rose that you need to forget
Every little doloreMi name is Antonio and I’m on the roof
Dear Margaret son twenty years that you’ll look
Fools are we when no one understands us
Even when your best friend betray you
I leave you this letter, now I have to go
Forgive the handwriting from the first grade
And you marvel why I try still an emotion?
Surprise yourself again because Antonio knows how to fly
